The Best Advice I Ever Received About the Florida Contractor Exam
The best advice I ever received when studying for the Florida contractor exam was simple: Stop trying to memorize everything. Learn how to find it. At first, I didn't really understand how important that was.
You look at all the books you are allowed to bring into the exam and immediately think you need to know everything inside of them. So you start reading page after page, trying to remember definitions, numbers, formulas, code sections, and random information. That can get overwhelming very quickly.
The reality is that these books contain thousands of pages. Trying to memorize all of that is not the best use of your time. What changed everything for me was learning how to actually navigate the books. When I saw a question, I started asking myself: What subject is this about? Which book would cover it? What chapter would it probably be in? What keyword should I look up in the index? That became my study process.
If I found something important, I highlighted it. If it was a section I knew I might need again, I tabbed it. Over time, I started remembering where things were without even trying to memorize them. That is why practice questions are so important. Don't just focus on whether you got the answer right or wrong. Focus on whether you know how to find the answer.
Even when you already know the answer, sometimes it is still worth going into the book and finding exactly where it comes from. That way, if the exam asks the same topic in a completely different way, you still know where to go. A lot of people spend too much time trying to memorize answers to practice questions. That can actually hurt you.
The real exam might ask the same subject using different wording, different numbers, or a different situation. If all you memorized was the answer, you can easily get stuck. But if you know where that information lives in the book, you have a much better chance of getting it right. The goal is not to walk into the Florida contractor exam knowing every answer from memory. The goal is to walk in knowing your books well enough that when you don't know something, you know where to look.
That one piece of advice completely changed the way I studied.
