To become a licensed Residential, Building, or General Contractor in Florida, you must be at least 18 years old, have good moral character, a credit score of 660 or higher (or take a financial responsibility course), pass the required state exams (Business and Finance, Contract Administration, and Project Management), and show 4 years of construction experience (You must show experience in specific areas). You do not need the experience before taking the exam you have 4 years after the passing of your first exam to gain the experience. A 4-year college degree (The degree can be in anything) can replace 3 years of experience. You can also use experience from another state or country as long as you were licensed or worked under a licensed contractor. Residential contractors can build and work on single family homes and townhouses under 2 story In height, Building contractors can work on and build residential and commercial up to 3 stories, and General contractors have no limits.
